So I was reading this pretty good NY Times article on Evangelicalism yesterday and this quote made want to bite somebodies head off. So I set up a vox account and here I go.
“Some might compare the religious right to a snake,” he said. “We may
be in our hole right now, but we can come out and bite you at any time.” -Terry Fox (1)
This is written by a man who was kicked out of his church because he talked about abortion more than Jesus. As right-wing as I used to be I do not want to be a part of anything this guy is a part of. It is statements like these that have given the term "Christian" its negative connotation in American culture. Jesus taught that the meek will inherit the earth and we're comparing ourselves to snakes?(2) I understand that this Fox guy is saying the religious right is down but not out but why on earth are the people who should love this world more than anyone else going to pop out and bite somebody? People get what Christians are against. They've heard about it. Is it too much to ask for people like this Terry Fox character to shut up and let somebody else tell people what Christians are for?
I think if anything it's ironic - that an individual/group responsible in many ways for the downfall of the Church in North America would use a snake as a representation of themselves - last time I checked in a Christian context or even a general social context being a snake is not a good thing. Definitely is an image void of compassion, truth or selflessness, more so it is one of terror, force and malice.
